How to Calculate Probability in Rummy
Rummy is a game which requires some amount of thinking and people who are good with numbers can easily master the game. You should learn to read the cards in your hand and should calculate what cards are likely to be in the closed deck or with the opponent. It is not that hard, you can start by getting to know about the concept of probability. Know Your Cards
Some of the basic things that you should know are that 2 decks of cards are used 52 each which makes a total of 104 cards + 2 printed Jokers. There are 4 suits of 26 cards each (13 cards per suit x 2 decks). The wild card Joker is selected at random which makes it 8 Jokers (1 from each suit x 2 decks) which makes the total number of Jokers to be 10 in a game (2 printed Jokers + 8 wild card Jokers).
Estimate the Jokers
You can estimate the number of Jokers in your opponents by closely monitoring your cards and the discards section. If you hold 4 Jokers, you can be sure that there are 6 Jokers which will be distributed with your opponents and the closed deck. With this, you can find out the probability of getting a joker from the closed deck. You can also assume that your opponents have a few or none of Jokers in hand. Always note that as the number of players increases it can get tricky to do a fruitful probability analysis.
Probability of Melding
You can also use probability to calculate the chances of melding the cards together. If you have cards like 9 of hearts and 10 of hearts, chances are that you can get 8 of hearts or Jack of hearts. In this scenario, you should understand that it is worth holding these cards. On the contrary if you have 3 of spades and 10 of Spades, you should consider that it highly unlikely that you will be able make a sequence. So in this scenario it is better to understand the probability and discard those cards of minimal chances of melding.
Colour Probability
Another insight you get is based on the colour of cards that are dealt to you. If you happen to receive many red cards, you can easily assume that there are many black cards with the opponent or in the closed deck. You can analyse this further by noticing the colour of the cards that are discarded by your opponent.
Odd and Even Cards
Similar to the colour of the cards, if you are dealt with odd numbered cards, the chances are that your opponent will be having lots of even numbered cards. This will help you to understand what value of cards your opponent holds.
Monitoring the Discards Section
It will be easy to do a perfect analysis as the number of rounds advances. If have monitored the discard section carefully, you will be able to memorize the cards that are discarded. This will help you understand what cards are left in the closed deck and also with other players as well. For example, if your competitor have discarded 6 of spades, you can safely discards the cards close to the 6 of spades like 5, 7, 8 etc.
